ALWAYS take out travel and health insurance BEFORE you travel: you never know what may happen. |
Be aware of your health conditions. Before a longer trip, get the general state of your health checked and visit your dentist for a check up. If you are using any type of medication, take an adequate supply: it may not be available locally. |
Bring mosquito repellent if you are planning a trip in the jungle or to places known to be infested with these insects as they could turn your trip in to a nightmare. |
Make sure that you make inquiries about the wet and dry seasons, or other possible weather conditions that may affect your holiday. |
Avoid taking taxis that are hanging around the airport offering their services when others are lined up. |
If you have been unable to find anything out about the airport that you are visiting, ask one for the airline staff or the government tourism booth for assistance, or ADVICE on the best way of traveling locally. |
Keep your wallet and valuable safely secured in a locked handbag or in your hand luggage at all time. |
Change some money into the local currency BEFORE you depart: avoid having to change or withdraw large amounts of money at the airport when you arrive. |
While on long haul flights, do not remain seated during the entire trip. Try to walk a little every hour or so. |
Do not carry your passport on you-leave it in the hotel safe. A photocopy will suffice if local law states that you need to carry identification. |
Packing delicate objects: Often on our journeys to exotic parts of the world, we purchase small and delicate handicrafts. To ensure their safe transport home, cut the tops of used water bottles with scissors and place your delicate items inside, adding socks as padding where necessary. |
Keep a small amount of local currency easily accessible in a compartment away from the majority of your money. You will need sufficient for the ride into town. |
Use travellerfs cheques or CREDIT CARDS wherever possible and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Be vigilant at all times and try to take SUFFICIENT cash with you when going out. |
When purchasing any items, take your time bargaining when you are in a developing country, particularly if you are purchasing an expensive item: the seller is unlikely to reach their bottom price without protracted bargaining sessions and possibly even several visits to the shop. |
